“If you’re stuck in an echo chamber, you’re never going to maximize your impact. The sum of collaboration between people with unique perspectives is greater than what they individually bring to the table.”

What do you do professionally?

I’m a Squarespace web designer and the founder of BrightSeid Web Design. I build websites with personality, because who wants to work with boring people? Our passions and quirks are reasons that customers choose to work with us, so I focus on creating websites that capture who my clients are. Plus, it’s my duty as a web designer to ensure that websites are easy for both my clients and their clients to use. Everything I build is customized for my clients’ marketing needs and level of tech literacy so they can maintain their websites themselves.

Tell me about your path to get where you are today. How did you get into that type of work?

I have a BA in Religion, which represented the start of a years-long journey to understand how people think and learn. This helped me deeply understand how to organize information so that it makes the most sense — handy skills for a web designer!

After college, I worked as a community builder at a local Jewish non-profit, mainly hosting happy hours for young Jewish professionals in Philadelphia. After a few months, I wondered why our target demographic wasn’t showing up at our events and realized that our advertising wasn’t hitting the mark. This is how I stumbled into the field of digital marketing. I apprenticed with a local design agency, interned at a marketing agency, and earned a certificate in web design.

The rest is history. I created my first website in 2016, started my digital marketing firm in 2018, and have exclusively offered Squarespace web design since 2021. It’s been a wild ride!

What is your professional superpower?

My superpower is creating connections: connecting people with businesses and businesses with communities.

I love meeting new people and finding inspiration in their stories. And I love figuring out if there’s a way we can help each other. I’m the kind of gal who delightedly went to one networking event every single week for a year!

How has that superpower contributed to your professional success?

First, my work is largely referral-based. Beyond that, I believe that there’s room for everyone at the table. I love talking about my challenges as a business owner and hearing about what others are struggling with. I’m a deep thinker and a problem solver. I go into every conversation thinking, “what can I do to help?”, not “how can I make them a client?”

If I were to ask your clients, manager, employees, etc. what it’s like to work with you, what would they say?

My clients usually mention my customer service, expertise, and organization and project management skills. Here are a few quotes:

“Rachel really knows what she's doing, not just with the design but also with optimizing copy and content.”

“Rachel is organized, timely, and made me feel like I could trust her and ask her tons of questions.”

"Rachel was able to really understand our community and helped create a website that reflected who we are."

What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?

It’s almost always my most recent client project. Every time I build and launch a new website, I feel like it’s the best work I’ve produced. I grow with each project, expanding my skills and streamlining my processes.

Describe the business impact you’ve driven for your clients.

One client recently emailed me to share that he recently signed two new clients after launching his site, a big win.

However, ironically, if I don’t hear a client in the months after their site launches, it’s usually a win. I work to ensure that clients have everything they need to maintain their sites themselves, so if I don’t hear from them, that’s a good thing. They often get in touch two to three years later for a bit of a refresh as their marketing strategy evolves or becomes clearer.

In what ways are diverse perspectives good for business?

If you’re stuck in an echo chamber, you’re never going to maximize your impact. The sum of collaboration between people with unique perspectives is greater than what they individually bring to the table.

Reflecting on my own work, I see a ton of age diversity among my clients. I’ve worked with people who are in their 20s and in their 70s. They are navigating all kinds of life and career transitions, working in all different industries, and have different goals for their websites. I love learning new things from people in different industries or locations, and who have different life experiences. I learn something new and gain new perspectives from every person I work with.
