As the founder of Belem Group and Galen Diligence, Trove partner Tanya has offered investigative due diligence and fraud investigation services for over 15 years. Over that time, she’s adopted a client-centric, personalized approach to vet people, data, and information, and identify red flags as part of the due diligence process, as well as conduct retroactive due diligence on deals gone wrong. Her work has helped dozens of clients to mitigate risk and provided them a sense of relief and clarity on the path forward.

An Asian Studies and Philosophy major in college, Tanya sought a career that aligned with her mindset and strengths, particularly her innate curiosity and top-notch research and writing abilities. On the advice of a mentor, she accepted a job at leading global risk consultancy Control Risks, where she investigated individuals and companies as part of transactional due diligence. Tasked with conducting research and analysis to identify anything out of the ordinary that could pose a risk to clients across a multitude of industries, her work required meticulous attention to detail, an inquisitiveness to consistently go one layer deeper, and the ability to process information and glean credible, actionable insights. It was clear that Tanya had a knack for this type of work and when she left Control Risks to attend graduate school after four years, several former clients tracked her down to inquire about her interest in freelancing. 

What began as a means to support herself during graduate school turned into a professional calling. After receiving her master’s degree, Tanya founded Belem Group, an investigations and due diligence firm that helps investors make sound decisions, supports attorneys during fraud investigations, and helps small and medium-sized businesses vet new partners and acquisition targets. A few years later, she was living in Boston when Massachusetts legalized recreational cannabis. Intrigued by the fraud-related repercussions and recognizing there were a dearth of firms offering services to that industry, Tanya stood up Galen Diligence, the first North American due diligence practice focused on the legal cannabis industry. The opportunity to steer investment toward high integrity people and organizations energized her, and she’s proud to have helped protect multiple clients from falling victim to fraud. Today, Tanya continues to operate both companies, serving a diverse group of clients, each with unique needs.

Knowing that her work influences her clients’ decision-making and even the futures of their organizations, Tanya does not take her work lightly. The knowledge, context, and intuition she’s honed over her decade-plus work as a corporate investigator has allowed her to develop remarkable pattern-matching skills, enabling her to contextualize when something is “outlier-level weird” versus a common, less concerning diligence discovery. While a less experienced, less diligent investigator may attribute the same level of concern to every red flag, Tanya taps into her deep experience to identify which issues are par for the course and which warrant serious pause. This track record means that Tanya can offer her clients a sense of relief: when they retain her, there is no doubt that they’re engaging someone with a highly ethical approach and that the results will be impeccable, in-depth, and context aware.
